HOPE Beyond Trauma…a mother’s journey
By Janie Smith, Founder of HOPE Beyond Trauma
“Who was this girl now looking so much like my daughter and yet so different from the child I had raised, loved and argued with?”
Author Janie Smith takes you behind the scenes with her family after their teenage daughter Tanya is involved in a fatal auto accident. Tanya dies and is revived in the Life Flight helicopter—only to face an even greater life challenge. Experience a mother’s agony and fears as her daughter awakens to the realization that she has sustained severe brain injuries. Doctors are unable to give a definite prognosis and advise that she may live in a nursing home for the rest of her life.
Janie bravely travels into the unknown along with her husband, a career soldier in the U.S. Army, and their two teenage sons. Read as her daughter struggles to put together the shattered pieces of her memory. As Tanya’s frustrations mount, intense anger and violent episodes surface. The family feels like they are living in a war zone. Janie fights to keep her family together while everything around her is falling apart—including herself.
Janie watches her youngest son deploy to the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan serving six combat tours. She tells of the difficulties soldiers and their families face when they return home from the war zone.
This incredible story is about an ordinary mother and family who faced extraordinary challenges and helped one another survive . . . and eventually thrive. Janie writes of lessons learned with candor and honesty. She is open about her mistakes, failures and shares how she picked herself up and started anew.
Today, Janie’s passion is to help others along their own personal journey. She founded HOPE Beyond Trauma and wrote …a mother’s journey to help, coach and mentor anyone who wants to move beyond trauma in their lives. This terrifying and triumphant life journey is one you do not want to miss.
Janie Smith taught in the public schools and overseas. She worked as a Red Cross Recreation Worker at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Janie has helped start several brain injury support groups, taught life skills to adults with brain injuries and founded Hidden Treasures Travel Agency for people with disabilities. She is a teacher, trauma coach and speaker living in Fairborn, Ohio with her husband, Richard W. Smith, First Sergeant, U.S. Army Retired and their dog Rudy.

This is one book that everyone should read. Janie has told her story about what her family has gone through and how it affected them. We never know when it might be someone in our family going through the same situation. There’s a lot of help out there if we know where to look and I think that is what Janie wanted to get out to people. This book is not just about Janie and her family but about how to reach out to others. I would recommend this book for anyone who has either experienced trauma or have loved ones who are living through or have survived trauma.

I have read Janie’s story of her almost insurmountable journey, to reach the level of functioning, social-ability and successful daily living her daughter Tanya is now enjoying. Janie had such inner strength and hung on when others many have given up. Her book is a very easy read and goes into much drama and real life detail on the steps Janie and her family went through during Tanya’s rehabilitation. I think with TBI they will be dealing with new issues and problems forever, but for the most part, Janie has put so much into the recovery of her daughter that they can live a semi normal life.
I truly admire Janie and her entire family for how well, through all the dark days, they stayed together as a family and were able to support each other. I would recommend this book to anyone who either has a friend or family member with traumatic brain injury or anyone just interested in seeing the pain and steps first hand, everyone involved, goes through recovering and learning to live with this injury.

HOPE BEYOND TRAUMA…a mother’s journey This is a magnificent work: from the quote from Christopher Reeve “Once you choose hope, anything’s possible”, which opens the book, this intense and energizing book gives hope to anyone who is dealing with trauma of any sort in their life. Janie tells us of her journey from that phone call when she found out that her daughter has sustained a brain injury, through the agonizing periods of shock, denial and eventual acceptance. She also discusses the other complicating issues in her life including two sons gone off to war.
I’ve read this book a few times and I’ve found more with each reading. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for anyone who has either experienced trauma or have loved ones who are living through or have survived trauma. Personally, I have discovered more about what my parents went through from an accident I had in 1973.

“For someone just starting down the “TBI road” with a loved one, your book should be mandatory reading. You have covered so many obstacles and road blocks that they will encounter. I know as my wife, Gerlinde and I traveled the same road and I’m still trudging along. Still, your experiences should give hope to others on the road that there is some light and hope at the end of the tunnel.”

Her heart is in the right place, she cares about helping YOU get through a difficult time. Here’s the key, she’s not somebody that researched and wrote about it, she’s somebody that lived it…she knows what it takes to get through trauma…and difficult times. You can’t go wrong reading her book, listening to her audio, or hiring her as a speaker or coach. Do it today you will be so glad you did!

I’ll be honest with you…I couldn’t put your book down. It’s extremely well written. The book made me well up because I have a 15-year-old myself, so I can’t imagine what it would be like to survive this. You’re a remarkable woman for doing that, and now for writing about your experience. I am honored to be one of your first reviewers because it will help many many many people through your story and lessons learned.
